HR Advisors Conference Blog

Further thoughts from the conference or about the challenges of being in an HR Advisory role.

Do your emails make managers yawn?

For many of us in HR Advisor roles, the quickest way to communicate with many managers or employees at once is by email.

When we send an email, we’re competing in managers in box with hundreds of other emails. Yet we often make our email header lines really boring.

Just like a c.v. is there to get you an interview, an email subject line is there to someone to open your email and read it.

So why not try an unusual email subject line?

If you use an interesting email subject line – your email may stand out – and you may get your manager to open the email!

Instead of ‘Performance reviews are due on Friday’ try something like ‘Was Homer Simpson a great manager?’ and then have something about him never reviewing his team, or ‘Do you want to be like Google with your team?’ and then talk about how Google have a review system where managers have regular conversations with their teams.

Find something that will appeal to managers – you may even try different subject lines with different groups (e.g. for your accounting managers try a pun like ‘3 steps to get your reviews to add up’.)

We’d love to hear any suggestions you have on email lines you used that made managers read your email!!
